A Biker’s Guide to Stafford
Stafford is the fourth largest county in England; with long roads, interesting scenery and plenty of fantastic stop-off points, it’s also a fantastic place to explore on two-wheels, too.
There are plenty of routes which are ideal for biking along, with options readily accessible to riders of all experiences. Here are just some of the routes that we recommend getting your tyres stuck into:
Stafford Round Trip
Starting off in Stafford and taking you through Newport, Telford, Knighton, Builth Wells, Newtown and Shrewsbury before heading back to Stafford, this long route takes you around some of the beautiful Staffordshire countryside while putting you and your bike through its paces. You’ll pass through the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which, as you can expect, is an incredibly scenic part of the route.
Start this route on the A518 at the southwestern corner of Stafford and follow the route onto Newport, turning south, then, and following directions for Telford. You’ll then head through the Shropshire Hills, onto Church Stretton, Bishop’s Castle and Knighton where you’ll need to join the B4357 to Builth Wells, followed by the A483 northbound which will take you all the way to Newtown and Buttington, where there’s another road change onto the A458 which takes you to Shrewsbury. You’ll want to head on the B5062 to Newport, before following directions back to Stafford.
Stafford to Uttoxeter
For a more relaxing ride, you’ll want to check out this route, which takes in some of the most beautiful scenery the Midlands has to offer. While it’s not a long route, it’s definitely worth a look, and is perfect for a morning, end-of-the-day or even short weekend ride.
Head onto the A518 and travel northeast onto Uttoexeter – that’s it! It’s a continuous route with a great road surface, easy to manage corners and is ideal for riders of all skill levels.
Midwales roundabout via Stafford
At around 350km, this route really does push the limits of you and your bike, and isn’t one for the faint-hearted. With scenery which will take your breath away, some interesting roads, challenging corners and more, are you ready to take on this route? It’s definitely worth it!
Setting off from the centre of Stafford, head north onto the A34 to reach Whitchurch. Once you’re in Whitchurch, take the A49 southwards which will take you to Shrewsbury, where you will need to join the A458 and A483 to cut across Newtown and Llanbister. You will then need to turn east and join the A44 and A456 to reach Kidderminster. Here you need to join the A442 and travel north to Newport. From Newport, you can take the B5062 back to Stafford.
