BMW S1000XR review

7th November 2016

The all new BMW S1000XR makes quite an impression in the adventure sports segment of bikes. Thought it does not quite match up to the looks of BMW’s gorgeous RnineT, it’s still a bike that can live up to the expectations of any rider. Once the bike fires up, it wastes no time in getting your adrenaline pumping. The bike’s improved engine, sturdy chassis, and elevated seat position adds to the thrill of riding it. Even though some might feel that the bike is not powerful enough (160 hp power as compared to 200 hp in other bikes), it does have a certain charm. The bike has features that make it stand out in a crowd. The bike has a starting price of £12,400. It is currently available in three colours – racingred, ocean blue metallic matt and light white or granite grey metallic. It also comes in three different variants depending on the specifications.

Specifications

Not much has changed for the BMW S1000XR as compared to the R1200GS in terms of bars, controls and windscreen. But then again the superbike engine is what makes one feel like it’s different. It gives the feeling of a tourer and rides like a sports bike. No wonder then that it has been classified as an adventure sports bike. It is powered by a DOHC and air cooled 999cc four-cylinder engine which is the same as that in S1000R. The maximum power is recorded at 160 hp and maximum torque at 83 ft-lbs. The 5.9 inches of travel provided by the front and rear suspension is average but provides good seat height. The bike stands at a height of 33 inches which is a bit shorter than the R1200GS. The front suspension is fitted with 46 mm inverted forks while the rear has dual-sided swing arm.  The swing arm provides a wheelbase of 61 inches. The Brembo brakes come with BMW ABS system and allows the bike to come to a halt in orderly fashion. The sturdy chassis is made from aluminum and houses a fuel tank of 5 gallons. In the S1000XR one can choose from different modes of riding like Rain, Road, Dynamic and Dynamic pro. The other prominent features of the bike are the suspension which can be electronically adjusted and the quick shifting system. The specifications may not be as good as other models in the same range but the BMW S1000XR is unique and certainly worthwhile in its own right.

Performance

At 238 kg, the adventure sports bike is easy to maneuver at high speeds and the six-speed transmission works effortlessly.  Shifting gears is smooth and almost feels like the bike shifts gears automatically. The bike takes confident turns during corners with the brakes and transmission working in tune with each other. The S1000XR is well balanced and both the front and rear seats are comfortable. The chassis and steady handlebar keeps the bike steady and reduces vibrations even at high speeds. Overall the bike’s performance is delightful and riders are bound to have an awesome experience.
