A History of BMW Motorbikes
While starting as an aircraft manufacturer, after the First World War, BMV turned their attention to motorbikes – and generations of riders are glad they did.
Engineer Max Friz took inspiration from existing motorcycles for the 1920s, designing the flat-twin boxer. This includes all new transverse cylinders and a gearbox connected directly to the engine which solved some of the cooling issues common in other motorcycle models. This proved so integral to the boxer engine design that it is still in production today.
In 1931, BMW released the R2, another single-cylinder and a single-cylinder shaft driven 200cc motorcycle. The following year saw the 400cc R4 then in 1936, the 300cc R3. They continued to break ground years o and in 1935 introduced the first motorbike boasting hydraulically dampened telescopic forks – the R12 and R17.
During the Second World War, BMW manufactured the R75 which was notable for its visually striking sidecar. The bike also benefited from a lockable differential, which made it very capable off-road.
BMW played many crucial parts in the history of motorcycles and provided important milestones, the first one in 1959 when John Penton biked from New York to LA in the shortest time, on a BMW R69! By the 1960s, BMW motorbikes only became more popular and by the 70s, the R90S and R100S became iconic classics, shaping the development of touring styles which set the standard to this day. In 1983, a 987cc, four-cylinder, water-cooled fuel injected engine, the K100 was introduced. As part of the K series of BMW Motorbikes, the notable features, including the simplified rear suspension, made it a memorable model. Thirty years after the RT series launch, the handling and the comfort of the R1150RT made it one of the most popular sport-tourers with BMW enthusiasts, however, the R1200GS (released in 2004) is still the biggest seller.
BMW Motorcycles have achieved record sales almost every year. In 2015 alone, 136,963 vehicles were sold. By 2020, they are looking to supply 200,000 vehicles to customers.
