In 1882, Enrico Piaggio set up a timber yard. 20 years later his son founded Piaggio & C right there, building locomotives and railway carriages. However, towards the end of the war, he turned to other areas such as aeroplanes, seaplanes and anti-submarines. When the war was over he saw a need to diversify the company’s activities to address the need for affordable transport to the entire Italian mass market.
While the demand was evident, no one could have predicted that within a decade the humble Vespa would sell more than a million units. The scooter even led to the coining of the Italian word “vespare”, meaning to travel to a location on a Vespa.
The original Vespa 98 and subsequently more powerful 125 gave Piaggio more than enough cash to bankroll new developments. This helped to fuel the quirky 3-wheel Ape and the 4-wheel Porter commercial vans. Since that very first Vespa, almost every single model released, ranging from the Vespa 5- to the LX and PX models, have all been popular with fans. The Vespa ET4 has even starred in many Hollywood films which helped to further extend its popularity.
Even decades after the first Vespa model was put to market, Piaggio has continued to break ground. It has been responsible for two world firsts in 2004; a gas-electric hybrid scooter and a tilting scooter that can more effectively grip the road through using two front wheels and a single back wheel. However, for all the plaudits the Vespa has received and the impressively long list of renowned scooter and motorcycle brands and models, there is still far more to Piaggio than this line.
