The history of Suzuki motorbikes
The Suzuki brand actually first launched as a manufacturer or looms, for weaving silk and cotton, but after 30 years Michio Suzuki decided he wanted to diversify into the automotive industry.
After World War II, Suzuki produced a two-stroke motorised bicycle, after a halt on production during the war due to the government declaring all types of civilian automobiles to be “non-essential commodities”.
This first motorised bicycle was called the Power Free, and consisted of a 36cc, two-stroke engine clipped on to a regular bicycle. The company continued to improve on their designs until in 1962 they won their first 50cc Grand Prix World Championship, and their reputation began to take off.
By the time the late 60s rolled around, the Japanese manufacturer was popular and respected by those in the American and European motorcycle world, and they had produced one of their best selling bikes, the Suzuki X-6 Hustler. At that time, it was the fastest Japanese 250cc.
In the 60s and 70s, Suzuki motorcycles started to gain some fame in the motocross world, which had previously been dominated by the European motorcycle manufacturers. Suzuki won every 125cc world championship from 1975 to 1984, as well as winning the 500cc MX race several times between 1971 and 1976 in the World Championship.
By the 80s the brand was well respected by all within the motorcycle community, and in 1975 they released one of their most famous bikes, the GSX–R750. It was the lightest bike in its class at that time, and delivered up to 100 horsepower, changing the face of motorbiking.
From then the manufacturer has gone from strength to strength, and is still just as well respected within the biker world.
