A History of Yamaha Motorbikes
While Yamaha has an in-depth and extensive history, they haven’t always manufactured motorcycles. In fact, the diverse company was and still is, involved in many different and diverse areas of production and manufacturing.
The company was established in 1955 after it separated from Yamaha Corporation. It is now headquartered in Shizuoka, Japan. The company, as of 2012, conducts development and production through 109 subsidies.
The first product, the YA-1, was born in their first year, 1955, and went on to win the 3rd Mount Fuji Ascent Race in its class. It was this bike, nicknamed ‘Red Dragonfly; that created the Yamaha Motor Corp. It was only onward and upwards from then on. In 1956, Yamaha added more lines to their brand, first with the 175cc YC1, and in 1957, the 250cc YD1. In 1958, Yamaha became the first-ever Japanese motorcycle company to venture into international racing, even taking 6th place in the Catalina Grand Prix. This was the start of their recognition in the US market and further afield. They went on to obtain further world championships and release further models such as the YDS-3 street bike in 1966 and the TD1C 250cc the year after.
Since then, they have grown and only progressed They have adapted and kept up with the motorcycle market year after year. In fact, Yamaha is the second largest manufacturer and seller of motorcycle sales and the world leader in water vehicle sales.
